Monthly Quality review meeting at GMHT

Meeting today our focus was on: – incorporate not only managers but one person from shop floor for each meeting. Lab inspector joined us today – refine what GMHT “values” as their KPIs (key process indicators) – teamwork is leadership in action. Being the example instead of just talking about what should be done

Play like a child

Santrock (2009) in Life-Span Development suggests that the infant is dependent upon not only the biological aspects that continually develop in the infant, but also the importance of the concept of “nurture”. For example, being more positive emotionally towards the infant, induces a more reflexive response of smiling and laughter.  “Nature vs. Nurture”. “We have to be like kids again”. These phrases I keep hearing over and over again for some reason. “We have to go back Read more…

Infant Testing or IQ Testing?

“IQ tests pay more attention to verbal ability… Infant tests pay more attention to perceptual-motor development and measures of social interaction.” (p. 151) My question: What is an important measure today? Is intelligence just “verbal ability”?  My speculation: Obviously not. Verbal ability is not the only measure of intelligence today. Rather there is a combination of this sort of intelligence, emotional intelligence, and also assertive intelligence.  Santrock, J. W. (2009). Life-span development.  Boston, MA: McGraw-Hill.

For every 1 lb, your knee will feel about 4 lbs

Runners knee is often labeled as a negative consequence of people running too much. That the myth of running marathons is bad for your knees (And marathons are not any length of a race, but 26.2 miles). Legs were meant to bend, walk and run, so the claim that running is bad on your knees seems ridiculous. A friend of mine who works at the Cleveland clinic, said to me that for every 1 lb Read more…

“Purpose” and “strategic direction”

An initial comparison of process engineering and philosophical engineering. In the heat treating world of processing parts for aerospace companies, there is a standard that is required for all companies processing parts that go into a plane, that must be met. The importance of following the aerospace management system AS9100D, is not just about maintaining a certification, but a guideline for a way of doing effective business. There are two main components. The first is Read more…

How little I know about this country

It was humbling to read a document I feel that I should know like the back of my hand tonight, but know barely anything, and discuss it amongst fellow United States Citizens. The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to our Constitution, the outline of what we are entitled to as citizens. Within this document lives the expectations of ourselves, our states, our country, and our government. And yet reading through and discussing all Read more…

My professional profile and my personal profile, is there a difference?

Recently reading research identifying a disconnect of Millennials not wanting to use Enterprise 2.0 systems at their “job”. That is they don’t see posting stuff on Facebook about how boring their meetings are. Or possibly afraid to share how cool an experiment went. Or proud of a report they got great feedback on. Or maybe even going to lunch with work colleagues. Which seems strange because we quickly see posts that resemble how bored someone might Read more…

My vote this election

I often get criticized when I say I’ve never voted in my life and I’m 29 years old. Accusations like I’m not being a good citizen or being ignorant to important issues that are ongoing in our country today. And even though I pay my taxes, abide by the local driving laws in every state, and make sure to engage with my community through various events to continually try and improve it, the idea of Read more…

Day 2: working with the government

“Government Source Inspection” is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the process and measurement of results are properly followed in accordance to procedure. They witness the heat treating process to ensure no falsification of records. And even though there are strict guidelines to follow, the sense of pressure of a “government representative”, “watching over us”, is not threatening.

Working with the Government

One of the cool things about being a process engineer at a heat treating company that has tremendous credibility in processing parts, is the interaction with customers that demand the highest quality of properties. Today working with members of our government, brought back a reminder to me something I sometimes forget… that actual people represent our government. That even though what I see on the tv might seem distant to me, they are actual people Read more…
